A modern country garden with both formal and informal design elements with a focus on relaxation and physical and mental well-being through immersive connection with plants and nature.
Our clients came to us looking for inspiration and help with the planting and layout of a large country garden as part of a cottage renovation project. A fairly open brief and large open space allowed us to really get creative with the features and layout here. The formal area of the garden closest to the house gives the family a beautiful space to look out at from a new glass extension. A herb garden close to the terrace and kitchen frames the side of the glass extension and is packed with herbs for wellbeing in scent, colour and medicinal properties. The deep planting beds are laid symmetrically and slowly reveal the top of the garden with screening of the driveway and garage beyond.
The formal area leads on to the main parking and driveway, gym and guest accommodation via an oak pergola walkway clad in Jasmine. Here the planting loosens with soft grasses flanking the pathway around the outbuilding and spilling into the driveway on the approach to a wildflower orchard and large grass area for play. The ‘meadow maze’ is designed to encourage slow movement through the fruit trees to a curved seat nestled in the wild flowers. Paths flow around into a ‘woodland’ path to a campfire area using wood stumps, slices and logs recycled from the garden as surrounds, path edging and seating.
Finally, the design incorporate an oak barrel sauna and hot tub for relaxing and unwinding accessed by a stepping stone path from the outbuilding around the lawn.
