Designing a country courtyard garden
Garden design features: low maintenance planting, small country house, private, lawn, Mediterranean feel, olive trees, courtyard
A planting design for a newly built cottage in a peaceful Oxfordshire village comprising of a courtyard area and small rear garden. Our client requested a low maintenance planting scheme, lawn for young children to play and some screening along the wall facing a private drive.
With a view over rolling landscape and beautiful neighbouring cottage gardens, the design includes lollipop trees to gently move the eye towards distant trees and shrubs while offering some green enclosure and privacy to the rear garden. Greens, whites and soft pinks/purples favoured by the clients were chosen to give year round structure using evergreen Ilex Crenata balls and seasonal colour from spring bulbs such as Alliums through to soft textural grasses and spires of Veronicastrum and the larger flowers of Hydrangea Paniculata. The mood shifts entering through a Jasmine clothed iron arch into the courtyard with three mature feature Olive trees and a raised wall planted with Sedums, Phormium and Verbena create a perfect mediterranean feel for al fresco drinks while soaking up the sun.
